In 1525, Bernardino Luini, one of Leonardo da Vinci's pupils, was commissioned to paint a church sanctuary. Luini needed a model to depict the Virgin Mary. He finally found his inspiration in a young widowed innkeeper. Out of gratitude and affection, the woman wished to give him a gift. She was poor so could not offer much, so she steeped apricot kernels in brandy and presented the resulting concoction to a touched Luini. Thus is the legendary beginnings of Amaretto.
